TOM BIRCH REYNARDSON

TOM BIRCH REYNARDSON is a solicitor based in London specializing in international arbitration. He was trained at the specialist maritime firm, Holman Fenwick and Willan, and qualified in 1983. He became a partner of that firm in 1987 and was hired by Herbert Smith in 1989.  In 1997 he moved to DLA Piper and in 2007 he set up Birch Reynardson & Co, a specialist international arbitration firm.

Tom’s practice is mainly involved with international dispute resolution. During his time as a solicitor he has acted in a very large number of cases in the Commercial Court, Court of Appeal, House of Lords and Privy Council, many of which have been reported. He has also acted in many international arbitrations and mediations.

Tom’s international arbitration practice involves all aspects of international trade including breach of contract, rejection of goods, non-payment for goods and services, quantity and quality disputes, delay, etc. On the marine side Tom’s arbitration practice encompasses all aspects of “dry” shipping work including charterparty and bill of lading disputes, contracts of affreightment, shipbuilding contracts and other technical disputes.

Tom has also been involved in arbitrations and mediations concerning aircraft leases, share options and marine insurance.

Tom has advised in cases involving arbitration under the rules of the LMAA, LCIA, ICC, GAFTA, LME, FOSFA, the Sugar Associations, CIETAC and CMAC, HKIAC, SIAC and SCMA, the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and ICSID amongst others.

Tom has written numerous articles for various legal and trade journals, and has lectured at University College, London and the London Shipping Law Centre. He is a member of the British Maritime Law Association, the London Maritime Arbitrators Association, the London Court of International Arbitration and the London Shipping Law Centre and is a trustee of the Comité Maritime International (CMI) Trust which promotes the education of young people in international law. He chairs the CMI International Working Group on Unmanned Ships and represents the CMI on this subject on the Maritime Safety and Legal Committees at IMO.

Tom is now accepting appointments as an arbitrator.
